Set the shelf pitch to the product

Shelf pitch is the gap between shelves. Tight pitch holds more shallow trays and pans; wide pitch clears tall cartons and upright bins. Measure the tallest item you store and add clearance so the shelf above does not crush it. A cooler that stores mostly pans can run a tight pitch, while one that stores milk crates needs a wide pitch.

Load rating and the floor

The rated load assumes the shelf sits level on a sound floor. In a cooler the floor can be uneven after years of use, so level the feet and check the rating against the heaviest realistic load, not the lightest. Spread weight across the shelf rather than stacking it at the center, because a centred load bends a wire shelf faster than an even one.
